Friday, Dec. 20, 1963 THE PROGRESS5 Books As Personal Gifts THERE are few gifts as lWpersonal, as graciously specific as a book. A book, in contradistinction to the old school tie, bespeaks more than just, "Merry Christmas-- I am a gift!" A book says that, and much more. It says, "I am a gift. chosen with care--to match your brilliant personality." It says further as is being un- wrapped: "I am a gift for one who reads. One who reads is gen- erally an intelligent sort . . . you read, therefore . . ." If a person is a lazy kind of Of you wouldn't give such a erson a book. None of us have ch friends and to that truth I submit the following as pos- sibles for y o u r intelligent friends. "A CALENDAR OF SAINTS," compiled by Vincent Cronin, Newman Press, 368 pp., $10.50. ERTAINLY a help in liv- ing the Church rear is the daily knowledge of the feasts and commemorations. That in- formation is readily available on your parish calendar. However, a more complete nderstanding and appreciation f the saint's feast can be at and with ease, if you have this book. Here, within very tidy bind- ings indeed, we behold a short sketch and an appropriate ar- tistic representation of hagio- graphic chronology from St. Coneordius (January 1) through Sylvester (December 31). As a combination art book liturgical handbook, this is an excellent choice from our friends at Newman Press. "THIRTEEN FOR CHRIST," edited by Melville Harcourt, Sheed and Ward, 271 pp., $5.oo. XERCISE some care in the gratuitous disposition o f s book. It is meant for the very, very ecumenical among US. This growing admiration for By JOHN J. ECKHART ularly) is new to some mem- bers of Holy Mother Church. But if you count some en- lightened and farseeing intel- lectuals among your gift-pos- sibles, by all means look into this book. It is compiled by an Angli- can clergyman and purports to eulogize 13 persons who, in the conviction of the com- piler, have made their total commitment to Christ. Among such obvious names as Pope Plus XII and Ronald Knox, behold we note Albert Schweitzer and Boris Paster- nak. Some of the literary bed- fellows are even hilarious in their proximity, as Dorothy Day, who has certainly made a profound commitment, and Billy Graham, whom I leave to you. But it is an interesting book containing good, bad, and in- different writing. The idea, ac- tually, is better than the reali- zation. "THE TRINITY and Our Mor- al Life," by Caslaus Spicq, O.P., trans, by Sister Marie Aquinas, O.P., Newman Press, 133 pp., $2.75. HE appeal of this book is universal. No one among your friends could help but be appreciative. If the dust iacket claims particular appeal to priests and religious, don't you believe it. Father Splcq, a well known professor at the University of Fribourg, shows the life of the Christian as it was meant to be led according to the writings of St. Paul. Father Spicq writes well; either through natural tal- ent or inspiration, his meaning is clear, as it is clear in St. Paul. We are citizens of heaven, all of us. Any aid to help us reach our homeland is of value. "ST. MARTIN DE PORRES," by Giuliana Cavallini, Herder of St. Louis, 254 p.p., $3.95. HEN the Church raised his humble Dominican to the altars, it proved again the sagacity of our faith in pro- claiming saints for the times. As we know, St. Martin de those in heresy or schism (their Porres is the first American intellectual attainments, partic- Negro canonized. It sings true. It does not obscure with fantasy, but rather proclaims the verity of the love of Christ in one doc- ile son of God. It is an adventure story, as the path to sanctity is never dull, rather it is beautiful and full of the excitement of dis- covery. "WE ARE CHRIST'S BODY," by Plus Parsch, Fides Pub-. lishers, 102 pp., $2.95. IlE name of the author him- s e I f is recommendation enough. Herein "the great man" ex- pounds the truths of the Mys- tical Body, and the position of sanctity that the Christian must occupy in that mystical body. One of the finest attributes of Plus Parsch was his talent and ability to profess truly in- tellectual concepts without los- ing what is commonly termed "the common touch." In this he far outshines our brainy brethren who write only for each other. Plus Parsch needs no recommendation from this column. Any book by him is a treas- ure. "FRIENDS, ROMANS, PROT- ESTANTS," by Joseph Me- Gloin, S.J., 159 pp., $3.50, Bruce Publishing. VERYONE should enjoy Fa- ther McGloin. He is clever without being cute. He is fac- ile without being slick. In a word he is a delight. In this book he explains to one and all, as per that wonder- ful title, what signposts God has left us for our return trip. Nothing he propounds is origi- nal. And the author would never claim that his points of fact were here first thrust upon an unknowing world. However, his manner of presentation is original. Again we recommend, for anyone. MINNIG'S Chrismas Trees AT 2-7442 420 Elliott Ave. West Seattle FREE: 2-ft. SHEEN N LOOKING back on the recent session of the Council, I have the feeling of having lived amongst four different "Churches." There is only-One Church, but the emphasis in one part of the world is different from another. All have the same end: the growth of the Cystical Body of Christ and the salvation of souls. But they achieve it in different ways. O 1) The Administrative Church. This is the Church in the developed and prosperous coun- tries of the world, in which, thanks to material blessings, the emphasis is on serviqe to the faithful--indeed spiritual service--in such works as schools, hospitals, press, social works, parish "plants," etc. 2) The Canonical Church. This Church is steeped in tradition and customs. Here, the bishops, particularly, and the priests live some- what detached from the people, giving profound spirituality to those who practice the Faith, but worrying little for those who do not practice, who are as lost sheep. 3) The Poor Church. This is the largest group in the world, and is not bound by national limits. Here the bishops are like Our Lord on the Hill of Capharnaum surrounded by the hungry and by sheep without a pastor. The wealth in which the Church bond deals is souls. 4) The Martyred Church. Here Our Lord re- lives His passion in vast areas--not only behind the Iron Curtain, but even in Northern Africa. One bishop told me of four of his priests being strangled last week. Two priests in one country and two in another were sentenced to prison for three years for having translated one of my books into their languages. We read Mass for their intention every Tuesday. O What is our role in the face of these four Churches? Since they are all parts of the Mys- tical Body of Christ we have to make blood circulate through this entire organism. The blood is made up of aid to balance off our wealth, and above all, as St. Paul said, to "fill up in our Body the sufferings wanting to the Passion of Christ." Certainly Christ suffered enough in His Physical Body, but we, by serf-denial, sacri- rice, prayer and offering of our trials for the Church everywhere, eomplete, in the Church, that Passion which Christ daily undergoes in the world. Sunday after Sunday, we appeal to you to be more than American, to be truly Catholic, to love the Church everywhere, to realize that 52 collections a year for the parish and a few second collections a year for the impoverished and bleeding Christ elsewhere are not enough. During this Christmas season, we try to be especially generous with others. Will you share your generosity with the Holy Father by sending a sacrifice to The Society for the Propagation of the Faith?
