The center, v a 1 u ed at $40,000, exemplifies t h e dedication of its parishion- ers, whose forefathers erected the beloved mission church 101 years ago. Featuring movablearti- tions for parish hall facili- ties and a kitchen, the ad- dition was mainly built by the Indians. Their labor saved the parish approxi- mately $28,000, their pas- tor, Rev. Joseph Dakn, proudly announced. Parishioner Support Building projects h a v e been a major portion of Father Dakin's mission par- ish activities. And trney .have been successful, thanks to the generosity of o all his parishioners. St. Anne's in Blaine, the other mission attached to St. Joseph's in Ferndale, boasts a new church addi- tion with a new altar, sac- risty, parish office and kitchen, p 1 u s laminated arches. These parishioners under the shadow of t he International Peace A r c h only spent some $18,000 for the new addition, val- ued at $35,000. All of these buildings will be used mainly for ed- ucational purposes. 175 Attend CCD At Lummi, 175 children are enrolled in CCD and are taught by four Sisters of St. Joseph of Newark and five lay teachers. One of the latter, Mrs. Ramona Morris, recently completed a CCD course at Seattle University on Father Da- kin's "parish scholarship." Believing in the import- ance of education, especial- ly for his Indian parishion- ers, the European-born pas- tor said, "Through deeper and more intelligent faith, they will acquire ambition for higher education." Historic Beglnnings The seventh oldest par- ish unit in the Archdiocese, St. Joachim's had its begin- nings when Lummi was first visited in 1860 by the late Oblate Father E. Casi- mir Chirouse, the first mis- sionary to the Northwest. The convert Lummis built the present church in 1861. Now 101 years later, the mission parish is as young and vibrant. A. M.
