The CATHOLIC NORTHWEST PROGRESS Page Seventy-One ,' e Christmas and HANG crouched in tle shadow of the door in the mud wail. He pulled his ragged clothes closer around him and tried to sleep. His stomach was so empty, and the cold wind made him shiver so, he couldn't sleep. "If only Father w alive, nnd I was back on the poultry boat on the Yangtze." Lonely, Chang talked to himself. "I never thought I'd be a wolf boy--stealing, grabbing, snatching and working when I can, just to live!" The cutting wind had the smell of the river in it. LENOX Chang "How I used to take care of the gos- lings, feeding them on rice water, then rice boiled, and herding them out on the swampy ground to feed on snails and worms, aIter Father and I poled up the shallow creeks." He made a funny suck- ing sound with his lips--the way he used to call the geese when the boat was ready to move. Just then he heard a flapping of wings, and hoarse gabbling. "Geese!" Chang looked around. "That's the way our geese honked when they shoved to get back on cur boat! . . . When the geese were plump, Father and I'd row up and down the river to the cities, selling our geese. Then we'd start over again, hatching more eggs. Soon the boat was overrun again with oisy goslings. What a ggod life that was!" Sighing, Chang curled up closer to the , wall, closing his eyes. And then he heard the same sound again, close and clear. "Geese! Real ones, and not far!" he ex- claimed, getting up automatically. Keeping in the shadow, Chang fol- lowed the sound. "On the other side of the wall!" he decided. Pulling himself to I te top of the wall, he thought he heard footsteps. He crouched down. Nothing stiffed, so he clambered over and soon discovered a coop in the corner of the compound. Chang fumbled at the wicker fasten- ing of the coop. "Got one!" he muttered, cautiously and expertly holding the goose by its neck. "How good this will taste roasted!" His mouth watered at the thought , But the other geese gabbled noisily at this intrusion, and he could not grab them all at one time.- "Stop thief!" a voice roared. Trying to twist around to see the own- er of the voice, Chang heard his Jacket rip, clutched in a strong grasp. "To the magistrate!" the voice ordered; and Chang was hustled down a narrow street just as dawn streaked the east. As he and his captor turned a corner, tzhey bumped into a white man, coming from the opposite direction. "What's wrong ?" asked the white man. "He steals my geese!" "I'll pay for your trouble, if you let me have the boy," offered the stranger. Grunting, but willing to bargain, the YAK|MA VALLEY HOME INSULATION CO.
