FIRST ST. PHONE 22821 The little town of Bethlehem itself is not believed to be much different today from what it was at the time of Our Lord's birth. The population of the town in the Saviour'a' day is not known, but it is thought likely that the normal peace- time population in these times is not greatly larger. The style of the houses in the whole region has remained the same for centuries. The customs of the people, however, have chaJlged greatly. The normal popu- lation today is said to be virtually all Christians. They grow barley, olives, figs and 'grapes. They are also artisans, such as mechanics, carpenters, bricklayers and weavers, and one of the chief industries 'is fashioning mother-of-pearl ornaments. This last-named industry was introduced in the last century by the Franciscan custodians of the Holy Places. According to tradition, the people of Bethlehem wove the tapestries for Solo- mon's temple in Jerusalem. Today, many of the inhabitants work in Jerusalem, walking five and a half miles in a north- easterly direction to reach the city each morning and returning home at night. $ $ Bethlehem in the Hebrew means "house of bread."
