A Short, Short Story By JIM 8TOKE, '48 Bellarmine High. OW is it possible that I, of all people, am here? Wait! I must first re- late the simple, yet miraculous incident of earlier this evening. About seven-thirty I parked my car outside the Boston General Hospital in the space reserved for doctors. I snatched my satchel from beside me in the same mechanical way I had been doing for three years now, and opened the car door. The virgin snow crunched beneath my feet as I busily walked up to the main building. "Christmas Eve," I murmured to my- self while taking the elevator to the tenth floor; "but so what?" Christmas Eve is just another night to me, even though many blissful people revel in their idea of some child named Christ being born two thousand years ago tonight. Oh well, here's the isolated ward. Now for two hours in the infantile paralysis division of the pediatric ward. I slipped on my white coat and tied the usual white gauze securely about my face, never dreaming t'hat within the next two hours, the whole course of my life would be changed. The first nine children whom 1 exam- incd were progressing as well as could be expected. The only two words I ]zcard from any of them were "Santa Claus." I humored each one by giving my assur- ance that Santa Claus would come dur- ing the night, and then---it ]happened! ' The tenth and last patient was an angelic looking, curly-headed little blonde girL-age: seven years and six montlm. Whenever slze .poke, her deep blue eyes glittered and sparkled. "How's our little girl, tonight?" I asked reluctantly, because I knew she was in a more serious condition than were any of the preceding nine. "Doctor, the Father was just here and he told me all about the first Christmas, and the bright star, and about the little baby Jesus born in a stable, and how Jesus will help me get well again, and- Doctor, will you go to Mass and ask: the baby Jesus to let me walk and go to school with the other boys and girls?" : It was through the "uildying faith of that innocent child that I, a former athe- ist, am kneeling here in this Catholic church attending a midnight Mass. I think 1 understand, now, what the Christ-Mass signifies. Woodworth & Co., Inc.
