Slim caught the-stern of the row boat and slowly pulled up alongside. "4Vait a minute," he growled, when Bert nade an impatient move toward his boat. "There's no rush. We've got all afternoon, Now, take it easy, and climb in carefully. Hey.' One at a time' Do you want to upset us both ?" He steadied both boats while the boys got settled beside him, then he took the iminter of the row boat and secured it to the big ring at the stern. They were drifting about, the dancing waves gently slapping against the sides f the boat. Off to one side, high cliffs "rose toward the sky. The cove was still in sight, but too far away to see if anyone was there. He hoped he could get the boys on shore, and have the boat moored before anyone knew they were gone. But that was almost too much to hop for. Slim went to the engine and' turned the fly wheel. Nothing happened. That was funny. The engine was still warm. It should have started right off. He tried again: No response. There wasn't even a spark, Then he remembered! His father had gone in the car after gasoline. They were out of gas. His first quick glance went to that diff. They would be all right until his father discovered the boat was missing, and came out after them. He did not remember the sand bar then, not until he saw the white spray where the waves washed over it. They were heading directly toward it! He looked back toward shore. "What's the matter?" Bert asked anx- iously. "We're all right now, aren't we-- until someone comes out for us? We wouldn't drift out to the ocean, would we ?" "You're in the ocean now, and straight ahead is Europe. Only we're beetled for that sand bar." Slim was tired of taking" all the responsibility. Let them know the truth. It was all their fault anyway. "Would steering make any difference ?" Bert ventured timidly. "Are you kidding? With no power, the tide and wind take you where they want to," Slim answered sharply. "But isn't there anything you can do?" Dave asked helplessly. Slim snapped his fingers excitedly. "Yes, by golly, there is! Dad had a fish- ing party out last week, and bought an anchor. It must be under here some- where." He went to the stern and slam- med. up the board seat. "Here it is!" he exclaimed joyfullly. He looked behind him again, at thal white, sudsy spray, washing over that treacherous bar, then lifted the anchor over the edge of the boat th a grunt. The rope burned his hands as he let it slide through them, while the anchor settled to the bottom. The rope tightened, grew taught. The anchor held. The sand bar was only three boatlengths ahead, but they were safe now--for a while. Slim looked up at the clear blue sky and his fears left him. It would be hours before dark, and his father always tend- ed his lobster pots before dark. Slim saw then that Dave and Bert were uneasily watching the harbor, then look- ing at each other.
