No dancing or parties on Chr:st- mas Eve here in Travancore; the faith- ful are wholly engaged in eager prepara- tion for spending the birthday of the Saviar in a fitti.'ng manner. From mornmg until evening, Chris- tian groups--men and women, as well as children--are seen wending their way to the nearest church or chapel to make their peace with God. O,n Christmas Day they will receive their Eucharistic Lord. In the evening, vespers and special pray- ers and hymns comprise the service of the church; and Outside, within an ele- gant circle, the Christmas Eve bonfire is ready to be lighted with elaborate ritual. There are no yule logs in India, but cut- tings of mango or any other suitable eastern wood are neatly arranged. Of- ferings of incense from the people--their gift to the newborn Babe--when added to the heap, help to make ignition easy and give fragrance to the fumes. At vespers, the Fifty-first Psalm--in praise of the Babe of Bethlehem -- is chanted. The hymns make special refer- ence to the virginity of Mary before and after the b;rth of Christ. They are, as a whole, a recapitulation of the my,ter- ious and miraculous incidents associated with this greatest event in the history of the world: the jubilation of the angels, the wcrzhip of the shepherds, the adora- tion of the Magi. One hymn exol the Babe as ".'Light, Lrd and King." "How sweet the song of angels and of men at the cave of Bethlehem'" i t continv.cs. GEORGE to the "sacrificial Lamb of Abraham," called "the object of the yearnings of tim Gentiles spoken of by Jacob," and ac- claimed as "the Savior chronicled by Job." The holy fire seen by Moses, which did not consume the bush, is cited as the symbol of the birth of the Child which did not destroy the virginity of the mother. Other prophecies recailed during service are "the King foretold by the son of Amos .... a King whose king- dom shall never end"; the "Child seated in a four-faced chariot" seen by Eze- chiel, who also told of a virgin's becom- ing the mother of a Child, both God and man; David's "Child descezding from a O virgin as dew from heaven"--a Child who, in the words of Dniel, would be" "the Light of David" and "the Stone cut without the help of human hands." Liturgical Procession After tracing the progress of the hope of the Incarnate Word from age to age in the light of the pronouncements of the Old and the New Testaments, the read- ing of the Psa!m is resumed with spec!al emphasis on the valse, "To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall re.oice." The . ];us;c o[ flutes and bands announces the giac tidings to all the country around. And like the alleluias of the angels, the colr loudly and joyfully sings: "Let Israel hope in the Lord, from hlcefozth now and forever . . . This is the day which the Lord hath made: let us be glad and re:glee thercn . . . Ble:sed be He that cow, lath in the name of the Lord. I will pa:: my vows to the Lord in the sight of all His People: in the courts of the house of the Lord, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem! Praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise Him, all ye people." The light.ng of the bonfire is a joy- ful event for the whole congregation. They .see in it the sign of salvation--the star that led to Bethlehem. The senior priest lights the fagots, while the pro- cession passes three times around the circle. More hymns are sung as the faith- ful throw quantities of incense into the flames. Then, as clergy and laity return to the church, ong fills the air: "I will take the Chalice of Salvation." To the Christians of the East, Christ- mas brings upiversaI joy.
