The CATHOLIC NORTHWEST PROGRESS Page Twenty-Three v" Power of Example By REV. LESLIE RUMBLE I was born of .Anglican Imxents, bap- tized in the Church of England, sent to various Sunday schools, even Presby- terian and Methodist ones, for such tell gimm knowledge as came my way; and I ras provided with my general education in the State hools of Western Australia. Tlose hoois were based upon the fre oamputry, cular policy of the day, creating the impression that re- ligion just does not matter. And when I left school, and got my first job as an office boy, I did as did .he vt ma- Jority of my school companions, dropped all religion in practice---simply not in- terested in it at all For six years I worked on in com- mercial life, but there was one fellow- worker there very different from the rest of u He was a very decent chap, and quite popular, but never showed the slightest interest in doubtful conversation, whilst depravity--those worst jokes we call our best--left him with a face as imimssive as a brick wall. And the thought at once came to me, ' "And he's better than the whole lot of us put together." For the first time I began to take a serious interest in religion. I bought all the books I could about the Catholic Faith, studied it, sought instruction, and ended not only by becoming a Catholic but a priest also. Before my ordination I had the hap- piness of seeing my father and mother and sisters Catholics, and since my or- dination have received and caused to be received a number of converts. But 1 mention this merely to stress the fact that alI I have ever done or am likely to do, is due in no small way to the example of a Catholic layman who knew how to behave as a Catholic layman should. He never know of his influence upon me. When I returned to Perth after my ordination, I sought for him to thank him, only to find that he had died during the years I had been away preparing for the pristhoed. But I feel that any good I may ever do as a priest will be credited to his ac- count in heaven. One lesson stands out for tm all We are known to be Catholics; but we never know how keenly we are watched, and what impressions we are creating in the minds of those around us simply by be- ing what we are. FROM AN ARMY CAPTAIN'S NOTEBOOK (Continued from page 22) at four o'clock and prayed until six o'clock. Then it was time to prepare for the celebration of the Mass. He was not embarrassed when he told me that he prayed every night from seven until nine o'clock before he went to be(L No! He does not smoke. So I put my cigarettes away and tried to hide my nicotine stained fingers. More than two meals each day gave him a had headache, so that gives him more time for his work and for his prayer. I am sure that in his immense charity he thinks that I am just like him. He does not know that one finds nine hours sleep necessary either by day or by night to keep one's body fit; or that rich-food is very sustaining, or that cigarettes are good for one's nerves, or that one must read the latest magazines ith the great- eat regularity if he wishes to stay abreast of the times. He knows none of these things, this tough little old man. Well, everything was arranged for that Mass in honor of Saint Francis Xavier, and I was briefed again not to forget that commemoration of Our Lady. I started back to the Base and as I drove along through a countrTside like that of New England I thought of Father David and the wise world in which he lived. I thought, too, of Saint Francis Xavier, that Paul of the Orient, Apostolic Delegate, King's lepresentative, Provincial of the Society of Jesus of Goa; Missiologist,- whose counsels have become part of the wisdom and the experience of the Church. Somewhere out of the past came the pic- ture of the man Xavier on his knees all night in the presence of the Blessed Sac- rament; Xavier planning and praying for the day when a church in honor of Our Lady of Kyoto would be a reality; Xavier training his followers and brothers tm imlf denial and self knowledge; Xavier demanding of others and practicing hu- mility and detachment as a prelude to elf-conquest; Xavier warning, always, to pray, lest preaching to others the mis- sionary be lost. Now that's me all over! I haven't even told you about the Feast of Saint Francis Xavier at Hiroshima or about my next date with Father David o the fifth of Febrmucy. That is the day, you know, on which John de Goto, Paul Miki, and James Kisai, Japanese Jesuits, were cru- cified on the Hill of Martyrs in Nagasaki, tragic city. I shall have to tell you about that later. t SEATTLE MANCA'S CAFE Vv'E WISH TO EXTEND OUR BEST "VISHES FOR A HOLY CHRL$TMAS TO THE CLERGY am] REliGIOUS MANCA'S CAIFE 108 COLUMBIA EL 7361 Season's Greetings GOLDEN RULE BAKERY & DAIRY Office 4450 Fremont Ave. - 0711 Store No. 1--440 Fremont - ME. 9693 Store No. 2--4912 Phinney- MF_, 9862 GOLDEN RULE DAIRY Stone Way ME. 0833 Olson Boiler & Machine Works," Inc.
