HE SANCTUARY of ()ur Sorrowful Mother in Portland dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Men, was founded in 1924 by the Servite Fathers to foster .devotion to the Sorrows of Mary and to lead men to God through her. It now ranks as one of the world's outstanding shrines, visited by nearly one-half million pilgrims annually. The Sanctuary, situated on two levels is adorned with sunken gardens, the focal point of the lower level is Our Lady's Grotto hewn out of the granite cliff wall which rises to a height of 150 feet with a life-size bronze statue of Mary, Our Mother. On the upper level is the world-famous wood carvings of the Seven Sor- rows of Mary, the Chapel of St. Anne, the Way of St. Joseph carved in Carrara marble and a panoramic view of the Columbia River Valley. The Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother is open daily featuring o-rgan music recitals during the summer months. It is located at N. E. 85th and Sandy Boulevard, approximately a one-half hour drive from the center of Portland. Friday, June 28, 1963 Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother Indoor Archery Popular HE SOUND of the bow string and the flight of an arrow is one that is becoming in- creasingly popular throughout the U. S., especially during the summer months. ost important in the enjoyment of this sport is learning to shoot properly. Correct instruction at the beginning will eliminate years of trial and error experimentation. Most outdoor club members have shot for years and their experience will be invalu- able to the novice. Excellent instruction is available in the Seattle area at the automatic indoor archery lanes--Burien Lanes in Burien and the Sherwood Archery Lanes in the Roosevelt area of Seattle. Usually, free instruction classes are available in these establishments and anyone wishing to shoot during open play hours will receive excellent instructions. A basic reason why archery is being revived is the ease and quickness a beginning archer can learn to be proficient With proper instruction a beginner will hit the target consistently at distances of 15 to 25 yards from the first few minutes of instruction. Anyone from six to sixty may learn and enjoy the sport. Recent innovations in bow manufacturing have eliminated the physical handicap suffered by women and children. odern bows made from wood and fiberglass are much easier to pull and will cast an arrow a greater distance. Arrows made from fiberglass and aluminum have much greater .accuracy than the old wood arrows. And, there are many other kinds of archery tackle designed to make the archer more proficient in a very short time. i .s..000, Let, s go : "bowing" SPORTSWpR Shorts- Capris -- C J/Jeans _.
