It is not easy to forego the obvious advantages of general- ization bnt the reader must not be misled by this quick way to acceptance. Daniel Callalahan is out of touch, another common mis- take of those carried away by the importance of their self appointed spokesmanship. While he chops tentatively at the tree of objective honesty, his little hatchet cnnnot keep up with the power saw of his mis- conceptions as ha hews down the parish priest, and parish life in general. A pleasant shopping atmosphere with a Hled variety of religious gifts. 607 Union St., See/tie I MUtual 2.3929 It was not before I read this book that I, a highly-educated Catholic, realized how much I was suffering, and how un- happy I was with my parish. I had suspicions, but no real proof, as Mr. Callahan has pro- vided. He goes on to castigate bish- ops and Religious orders for acting as if they owned the schools, which in fact they have started, sustain, and have title to in law. He flails fur- thor at seminary training, an- cestral mores (here he dis- agrees with Will Herberg's fine book, "Protestant-Catholic- Jew," which I feel was the more correct assessment) and the misguided Catholic who is not involved in a "progress- ive" (?) move to the suburbs, and in a positive dither about the American Catholic. Mr. Callahan considers spir- itual advice as "narrow." And it is this concept that stimu- lates a plea for caution in the pursuit of Mr. Cnllahan's recipe for happiness for the in- tellectual American Catholic. I think he honestly believes himself to be free from bias. It is his personal conviction, rightfully, that religion must be more closely equated with exterior action. But he is mistaken, which is only my personal conviction, in his overall conclusions. Even the careful reader will be left with a vague uneasiness that something has been left out, something is missing from the grand total. The author, again as is the fashion, has little to say about spiritual humility, the dangers of pride, and the relative un- importance of who runs the shop as long as glory is given to God.
