Many have bemoaned this fact, called for immediate steps to create these great Catholic brains, but few, that I know of, have taken the time and mental effort neces- sary to understand the par- ticular problems that fash- ioned this circumstance. Father Wiegel shows the why, and thereby aids in solv- ing the how; Another area that indicates clear analytical thinking is his fine explanation of the very basic adjustment to reality as reflected in the Catholic and Protestant postures. Now his thought here is not overwhelm- ingly original, but is rarely ex- plained with such lucidity. There may be some disagree- ment with other positions he would defend, change, or ex- plain, particularly concerning the degree or extent of Catho- lic interest in Protestant the- ology as a further aid to dia- logue. But on the whole the work is worth the effort, and it is not the place of this column to carp at details in a book by a man of this stature. At least not this time. Some editorial conjectures appearing in the U.S. press are nothing short of amusing. All these entirely ignore the 420 East Pike St. important fact that Khrushchev recently requested Castro to have found the word "immortality" then. In other words, "security" is the economic side of "immortality." This is precisely the way it appears in the Gospels. Our Lord told the story of the man who added barn to barn in order to give him that final security where he could say to himself: "Come, soul, thou hast goods laid up for many years to come; take thy rest now . . ." It was not eternal rest but temporal rest he sought, not immortality but security, not merit but cash. And it was all thought of in terms of MY barns, MY harvest, MY goods--as if the Lord had given him nothing! Does this mean there is no place for secur- ity in our lives? Most certainly not. The Scrip- tures condemn the man who makes no pro- vision for the morrow. But security must never be purchased at the cost of eternal salvation; there must he a union of the two. How is this possible? If you were to sit down and think of a plan this is probably what you would decide: "I would like two things: I) to be assured of an income while I live, and 2) to have it dis- posed of at death so there would be ne law- suits, no quarreling among relatives and less tax bite. Most important, I would like it to go to the poorest of God's poor. And I would want the Vicar of Christ to make the distribu- tion of my capital, because he knows the needs of the poor better than I." Harriman Flunks Soviet Test U.S. the refugees are forced to undergo the humiliation of being stripped to ascertain that they are not concealing any- thing of value. They are furthermore re- quired to pay all expenses per- taining to processing of gov- ernment documents as well as transportation. They must for- feit everything they own. For example, a rancher from Oriente province said he had to give up all his cattle and sugar property, his home and personal belongings as the price of exit for himself and family. No poor people are permit. ted to leave, because they do not possess sufficient "ran- som." This point is not gen- erally reported by our press, much less by our govern- ment. If everyone who wanted to leave Cuba were allowed to emigrate and if transportation come to Moscow, which obvi- ously was tantamount to an order from the boss. This must be the silly season again. More Exiles Frightened, yet jubilant, 675 Cuban refugees arrived in Flor- ida Monday. They came on the same ves- sel which last week transport- ed another 8,000 tons of ransom goods to Havana. This, inci- dentally, brought to more than half the payment of the $62 million worth of ransom pledge made for return of the Bay of Pigs captives to the U.S. last December. The terror-stricken exiles are very reluctant to relate their horrifying experiences in their homeland for fear their names may be revealed and reprisals against their relatives and friends still in Cuba may follow. Enough, was said, however, to convey the picture of a na- tion writhing in misery and were available, there would mercilessly s u p p r e s s e d by soon be no one left except the "swarms" of Soviet soldiers. Soviets and Castro Commu- Almost half of this shipload hints. And, of course, some B0,000 of men, women and children permitted to leave the island are Cuban-born naturalized U.S. citizens who were residing in Cuba. This may partly account for their release. Thus far, this is merely a statement.of-fact news item. Its meaning is something quite different. 'Ransom Needed' The shipment of these refu- gees is not an act of mercy on the part of a benevolent gov- ernment. It is another aspect of release of prisoners through payment of ransom. As pointed out in these columns some time ago, any- one wanting to leave Cuba must leave behind all his worldly possessions which are cent[coted by the government. Before they embark for the wretched political prisoners as- sertedly being held under in- humane and near-starvation conditions. To add to the woes of the exiled Cubans in this country, the U.S. government this week withdrew further financial sup- port of the Cuban Revolution- ary Council, but it has not re- laxed its policy forbidding raids against Castro. On the con- trary, it has reinforced its Coast Guard and increased police vigilance in the Miami area to prevent any exile ac- tion groups from leaving these shores. For this protection, has Cas- tro been thankful? Nyet! Harriman Flunks Not so well received in Mos- cow last week as Fidel Castro was U.S. Under-Secretary W. Averell Harriman. He had been sent there by President Kennedy to wring from Khrushchev an assurance that he would do all he could to restore peace and order in LaDs. Back in the national capital again this week,. Harriman gave an account of his stew- ardship or test of strength. From all appearance, he didn't do so well, because after three and one-half hours with Khrushchev, he was still unable to know what the Kremlin boss would do. From here it looks like Har- riman flunked. He said that Khrushehev was hurried and could give him no more time for discussing LaDs because Castro was coming to town. But he promised to up- hold the 14-nation agreement at Geneva in 1962, and that was that. Harriman implied that Khrushchev would not or could not make an effort to restrain the Communist forces threaten- ing to take over the Laotian neutralist regime. Obviously, we couldn't ex- pect him to violate his ethics by interfering in the internal affairs of another nation. Facts Are Facts The crux of the question appears to be that Khrush- chev's interpretation of the Geneva Conference agreement on Laos is quite different from that of the West. This much was admitted even by Harriman. Despite the fact that the So- viet Union is co-chairman of the conference together with Britain and under obligation to supervise the implementation of the agreement, Khrushchev takes the view that by merely ma!ntaining the "neutralist" regime, nothing further can be done. He has refused to cooperate with Britain unless a condom. nation of the U.S. for having rekindled the Laotian trouble be accepted. Associate Professor, St. Louis University How binding are promises a child makes to God? I had a serious illness when I was 12 and made a sort of promise that I would enter a convent later if I got well. 1 regained my health, but since that time I have had no desire to enter a convent. After nine years the promise still bothers me. I've been in love several times, yet some. thing seems to happen very time and I eventually lose the boy. Is God telling me that I promised to serve Him another way? l read in a book that God doesn't make such bargains, but I'm still very confused. HE BOOK was right. God doesn't make such bar- gains. The fact that you are still confused, how- ever, suggests that you either didn't fully understand what you read or failed to see its application to your own situation. Your real misfortune or mistake is to have kept this uncertainty about your childhood promise so :Dug unresolved. It is always psychologically and spiritually unhealthy to live with such a lingering doubt, for it destroys our peace of mind by giving rise to various conscious or unconscious feelings of guilt and may also weaken tur determination to persevere in making something of our lives. Because when the going gets rough, we can easily excuse ourselves from further effort FATHER on the pretext that God doesn't want us to THOMAS succeed. How can you resolve your doubt? Let's start by considering the conditions under which a serious promise to dedicate one's life to the service of God by entering a convent could be made. Such a promise would require a reasonably adequate knowl- edge of what a dedicated life in the convent implies in terms of meaning, personal qualities and conditions. It would also de- mand due reflection and free choice, for such a decision in- volves one's entire life. Since an essential element of a refigious vocation is accept- ance by an appropriate religious life can only mean a promise to offer oneself as a candidate to some religious order or con- gregation. All candidates must possess the necessary qualities and undergo a considerable period of probation and training before they will be accepted. Just A Vague Conception OW let us consider the conditions under which you made your promise. It is very doubtful that at the age of 12 you could have had more than a rather vague conception of the meaning of a dedi. coted life in the convent, although if you attended a parochial school and had been taught by Sisters, it is not unlikely that with many girls your age you had thought at one time or another about becoming a Sister. Further, since you were ill at the time, your promise would not have been based on the required due reflection and free choice. You are apparently afraid that you might never get well, and it was probably this fear that moved you to attempt to strike a bargain with God--if you regained your health, you would enter a convent! Was your promise morally binding? Considering the serious implications of the promise, as well as the conditions and cir- cumstances under which it was made, we must conclude that it was not a valid promise and therefore not morally binding: The fact that you later experienced no desire to enter a con- vent further suggests that your promise was made with little knowledge of yourself or of the religious life and was conse- quently meaningless. Although your case may appear somewhat unusual, I have chosen to discuss it because it calls attention to several com- mon mistakes that merit serious consideration. First, as I have indicated, it is psychologically and spiritually unhealthy to harbor doubts or uncertainties in matters involving personal moral obligations. One should resolve the doubt at once, and once and for all. Usually this implies seeking the advice of a competent moral director, since few of us are good judges in cases in- vulving our own interests. Once a prudent decision has been reached, we should stand by it and absolutely refuse to allow further doubts about the matter to trouble our conscience. Call Is Divine Invitation ECOND, a call to the religious life is a divine invitation implying voluntary acceptance or free choice; it does not impose an obligation. Unfortunately, some people go through llfe harboring a secret sense of guilt because they felt they either had a religi- ous vocation and didn't accept it or, having entered the refigi. nun life and found it unsuitable, that they should have tried harder to make a success of it. Such people carry a built-in predisposition to unhappiness. They are suspicious of success, while failure merely con- firms them in their sense of guilt, for they feel God doesn't want them to enjoy their present way of life. Same of Y0U" remarks about your courtship experience suggest that you may have a somewhat similar attitude. No, God doesn't make such bargains. A refigious vocation is a privilege, a divine invitation to serve Him ia a more perfect way, but it is not an obllgafimt. Because of its special demands, it implies a free, deliberate response, not a wishful promise. There are many ways of serving God. Before choosing our way we should resolve our doubts and then give God the best that we have in the way we have freely chosen.
