CFM g Friday, April 16, 1965 g THE PROGRESS--Page 25 0 +And the Parish , My acquaintance with CFM has been re: cent and my knowledge of its procedures is somewhat limited, but even so I am a strong supporter of CFM. I say thisecauseCFM is not just anoth- er in that long list of parish organiza- tions. Here is one that truly attempts to intellectually form its members and at the same time manages to challenge them to do something about a particular si.ttation. Twice a month fifteen couples meet in homes within our parish and for an hour and a half dis cuss and consider theological matters, such as the priesthood of Christ, the paschal mystery, the dignity of baptism the liturgical renewal and also social problems, such as civil rights, local and world poverty local elections or job opportunity, The intelligent and continued consideration of these and related subjects is surely the first step if the renewal en- visioned by Vatican II is going to take place. CFM does not stop with talk; the dis- cussions which take up the greater portion of any meeting lead to a determination to do something In the home, in the parish or in the community. The action may be a telephone call to the pastor, the assistant or one of the teachers in the parish school, a visit to the neighbor to sound out his thinking, a letter to a public official or to one of the local newspaperso Without some form of definite action CFM would be just another parish discussion group. Their willingness to become involved sets CFM apart. It assures a parish of members who are ready to be genuine witnesses of Christ to others not just in word but in deedl ly Father Walter 1. Mortek +, Perhaps, actual instances of CFM action will make this clear. Realizing the need of more communication between white and colored, several of our members visited and had dinner in the homes of negroes and in turn have invited a negro family Into their home. Aware of the tawdry and poor religious art in so many homes CFM sponsored an Advent Art Festival for the parish to let all see what could be done simply and yet in good taste for the keeping of Advent and the celebration of Christmas. During the election campaigns Qf last year it was CFM who brought candidates to the parish hall for a dis- cussion of their political philosophy. For the past two years, thanks to CFM, we have had a meaningful Bibie Vigil on the night before Thanksgiving to emphasize the religious character of this holiday. Each month the people of St. MatthewPs enjoy a Newsletter of two pages that is the work of different CFM couples. We cite these examples 'Io offer some notion of what CFM does in a parish. It should be stressed that these ideas came from the CFM membership and not the pastor. Perhaps the greatest value of CFM is the way it brings about a.change in the thinking of its members. I have in mind two men from our parish who made apoint of telling me that it was their CFM dis- cussions that made them see the question of civil rights as a moral issue for the Cathollq and not one of politics or ex- pediency. If CFM can bring about this kind of decision, it has to be a worthwhile organization for St. Matthew's or any other parish. Hiippy Easter Pacific Underwriter's Corp. MA. 2-3382 Joseph Vance Bldg.
