Fhollc Norfhw9 Progress April 6, Men of Serra BY FRED CORDOVA AVE you ever thrown a stone into-the middle of a lake and watched the circles of water, instead of diminishing, ripple larger and larger until they hit the surrounding shores like waves ? Dan Rooney has had a similar experience. Twenty-seven years ago Dan and three other men cast an idea into the minds of Catholic men in America. That idea has since permeated the sanctum of Vatican City and has flourished in Canada, Great Britain, Mexico, Peru, Italy, Puerto Rico, Uraguay, Argentina and Germany. We refer to the well-known Serra move- ment, which had its humble beginnings in Seattle. Since that meeting of four men on Jan- uary 2, 1935, Serra has grown to become to- day an international organization, composed of 220 chartered clubs with a combined mem- bership of more than 10,000. Its primary purpose is to promote priest- ly vocations by fostering and assisting in the education ol young men to the priesthood. At its ninth annual convention in Kansas City in 1951, Serra International was affili- ated with the Pontifical Work for Priestly Vocations by Rome's Congregation of Semi- naries and Un,iversities. And Dan, now 75 but still active as ever in Serra, marvels at its results in a proud and simple manner. At first glance, you would think that Dan is only 60 years old. His hair is gray but shoulders are broad and Dan looks taller than six feet. When you hear his wit, expounded at meet- ings of the Serra Club, the Carroll Club, Se- attle Council's Knights of Columbus or the Fourth Degree, you'd even think he was younger. With the litany of these various lay org- anizations, you can surmise that he is active. (Continued on page 30) THREE OF the surviving founders of Serra swapped notes about the "old days" when the first Serra Club had been established in Seattle in 1935. The co-founders (from left) are Richard Ward, Harold Haberle, and P. D. (Dan) Rooney. The fourth founder was the late Leo Sharkey. SEATTLE LUMBER CO.
