6, 1962 Catholic rthwest Progress13 A Fervent Desire To Serve God BROTHER POPISH Principal, O'Dea High School HE call to the brother- hood is a vocation that is quite distinct from that of the priesthood. While both priests and Brothers are in the service of Almighty God, they serve in a different man- ner. A Brother's dedication involves the taking of the simple vows of poverty, chas- tity and obedience and the strict observance of the rules of the congregation or order. Frequently other vows are added to the three basic vows; these special vows dedi- cate the Brothers to a specific work of charity, such as re- ligious instruction of youth or care of the sick. Some Brothers belong to ord e r s of priests-- Jesuits, Dominicans, Redemp tori sts, Franciscans a n d Benedic- tines, to mention a few. They assist the work of the priests of these orders by doing such works as cooking, carpentry, gardening and office work. By the exercise of their skills they free the priests for the important apostolic work of his vocation. Between Chapel and Classroom M o s t Brothers, however, are members of congregations whose members are devoted to some particular work. Among these are the teaching Brothers. They labor for their own salvation as well as the salvation of their students. Their time is divided between the chapel and the classroom. By following the rules of the congregation and the practice of the vows, they strive to live a life in closer union with God. Through their instruc- tion and example, they aim to bring the souls of their students cloer to God. The training of the teach- ing Brother begins with the Novitiate, which is an entire year devoted to the study of the religious life. The empha- sis is on the spiritual train- ing rather than the intellec- tual. Prayer sanctifies the entire day of the young novice; it introduces him to the Broth- er's way of perfection. Prayer instills t h a t whole-hearted generosity that is so neces- sary for the complete dona- tion of self to the service of God and neighbor. Continue Studies After the completion of the Novitiate, the young Brother begins his preparation for his life in the classroom by his university studies. After he has acquired the Bachelor's degree he is sent to teach in one of the schools operated by the congregation. After they begin teaching, Brothers must continue their university education by securing higher degrees so that they may be equipped to provide first-class education to their students. The only order of teaching Brothers found in the Arch- diocese of Seattle is the Chris- tian Brothers of Ireland. They operate Briscoe M e m o r i a 1 School in Kent and O'Dea High School in Seattle. The Christian Brothers of Ireland have been teaching in the United States for the past 80 years and at present ad- minister over forty schools throughout the U.S. and Can- ada with mission schools in the West Indies and South Africa. In these schools the Brothers teach all levels-- from first grade through col- lege. The Brothers come from all walks of life, all nation- alities a n d widely different backgrounds. They have one thing in common--a fervent desire to serve God. HAPPY EASTER GREETINGS Shadel Hospitals, Inc. 7106 35fh S.W. WE 2-7232 BANKHEAD ELECTRONIC COMPANY 10026 16th Ave. S.W.
