20--Cathollc orthwest Progress 1962 A Nun of the Carmelite Order Seek God In Solitude.... HE cloistered Carmelite Nuns trace their origins back to the Prophet Elias who retired to Carmel "to seek God in solitude and to pray for His people." There are documents showing the existence of Carmelite Nuns in Palestine before 1200 and they were knovn in Europe as early as 1261. They lived according to an austere rule of silence, fasting, prayer and penance. This primitive rule was mitigated in the fifteenth century, to be brought back in the fullness of its austerity during the next century by St. Teresa of Avila, the great organizer and mystic of Carmel. Carmel gave the world one of its most popular modern saints, St. Therese of Lisieux, "The Little Flower of Jesus." The Carmelites were the first religious order of women to found a convent in the United States. Four Carmelites arrived in Maryland in 1790. Later the Carmel moved to Baltimore. The Carmel in Seattle, known as St. Joseph's Carmel, has come from this first monastery in Baltimore. Uke the Good Shepherd.... HE glory of God through the conversion and re-educa- tion of girls and young women who have left the path of moral rectitude or who are exposed to moral danger is the primary purpose of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd who maintain St. Euphrasia High School in Seattle. St. John Eudes, a missionary priest of seventeenth century France, was the first to organize a group of women to care for girls who wished to reform their lives. In the early nineteenth century St. Mary Euphasia Pelletier organized a Generalate in Angers, France, and thus revitalized the Congregation. The community maintains 400 homes throughout tle world. The first Good Shepherd Home in the U.S. was founded in 1843. There are now 52 homes organized into seven provinces in the United States. There are eight homes in the St. Paul Province which supplies the Pacific Northwest. Congregation of Our Lady of the Good Shepherd JUNELL'S BEAUTY SALON LA 2-6882 7528 20th N.E.
