Little Daughters of St. Joseph April 6, 1962 Catholic Northwest Progressh21 Theirs Is A Labor of Love.... HE spiritual and material welfare of the priests and seminarians in seminaries and religious houses of study is the work of the Little Daughters of St. Joseph. In the Seattle Archdiocese these Sisters work at St. Edward and St. Thomas Seminaries, preparing meals for the priests and seminarians and beautifying and keeping the altars clean, rfhey also tailor cassocks and make and mend sacred vestments and linens. The unique vcork of this congregation began in 1857 when Rev. Antoine Mercier, a Sulpieian priest in Montreal, considered found- ing a community of nuns consecrated to the spiritual, and material welfare of the clergy and seminarians. With the help of Miss Rose Dauth (later Mother Julie) the two started the new community. The Motherhouse of the order is still at the Grand Seminary in Montreal with the only house in the United States being at St. Edward and St. Thomas Seminaries in Seattle. In The Footsteps Of A Saint.... HE two major apostolates of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart can be found in the Seattle Archdiocese at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Hospital and at Sacred Heart Villa School. The Order was founded by St. Frances Cabrini, the first citizen saint of the United States, and it was founded primarily for the care and education of children. It was only when Mother Cabrini came to the United States to establish schools and saw the Fhysical and economic plight of poor Italian immigrants that she began hospital work. Born in Italy, Mother Cabrni began the Institute of Ssters at the direction of her bishop who recognized in Mother the crusading, missionary spirit. Her zeal for souls urged her to go to China, but Pope Leo XIII said, "not to the East, but to the West" and so Mother Cabrini came to the United States. Other countries of her labors included Italy, France, England, Spain, Central and South America. WISHING YOU A MOST HAPPY EASTER Adams-Forkner Funeral Home Stuart N.
