24---Catholic ;hwesf Progress A 1962 Founded Seattle's First Catholic School... HE distinction of establishing the first Catholic school in Seattle goes to the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary who founded Holy Names Academy in 1880. The order was founded in Montreal in 1843 and now numbers 5,000 with Sisters serving in the United States, Canada, Peru and South America. When the community numbered but 73, 12 came west in 1859 to assist Bishop F. N. Blanchet in Oregon. Today the Oregon province, which includes Washington, counts nearly 1,000 members. The province maintains two colleges, 48 schools (including nine high schools), and a day nursery besides providing missionaries for the 14 missions in Basutoland and Orange Free State, Africa. Schools in the archdiocese taught by Holy Names Sisters are: Holy Names Academy, Immaculate, Sacred Heart, St. James Ca- thedral, St. Joseph, St. Anne, St. Patrick, St. Mary, all in Seattle; Immaculate Conception and St. Mary Magdalene in Everett and St. Frances Cabrini in Tacoma. Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary Teaching the Young Is Their Apostolate ... HE Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur began their apostolate of education in the United States in Cincinnati in 1840, 37 years after the founding of the order by Julie Billiart and Francoise Blin de Bourdon in Amiens, France. The Sisters receive their name from Namur, Belgium, where the mother- house was transferred. In 1843 six Belgian Sisters came to the Oregon wilderness and worked there until 1851 when they went to California to continue their work of Chris- tian education. Today there are five provinces in the U.S. : Ohio, Massachusetts, Cali- forrda, Maryland and Connecticut. The Sisters conduct three colleges: Trinity College in Washington, D.C.; Emmanuel College in Boston and the College of the Notre Dame in Belmont, Calif. Secondary and elementary schools, as well as catechism centers, are taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. In the Seattle Archdiocese they teach the children of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Seahurst and St. Mark Parish in Seattle as well as providing tbree Sisters for the faculty of Blancher High School in Seattle. Inaugurated Christian Family Living Program ... HE Sisters of the Presentation at Our Lady of Fatima School and Blanchet High chool in Seattle have been in this Archdiocese only eight years, but the history of the order goes back to the eighteenth century. Today these Sisters can be found around the world as well as in 18 states in this country. The Presentation Sisters of each state are formed in a no- vitiate proper to the state and under the direct supervision of the motherhouse for that area. A biennial meeting of Mothers General provides for a certain communal unity of thought but does not change the autonomous nature of each group.
