26--Catholic Northwest Progress April 6, 1962 t Sisters of St. Dominicongregotion of St. Thomas Aquinas Pioneers in The Teaching Of Religion HE Sisters of St. Dominic of the Congrega- tion of St. Thomas Aquinas were founded in Pomeroy, the diocese of Nesqually, in Washington Territory, Oct. 24, 1888. At the time, each Dominican Convent was in- dependent, although the three foundresses were from the Jersey City, N.J., convent. They had come West in answer to an appeal for teaching religion in Washington Territory. The community maintains 15 schools n the Archdiocese. They are: (in Seattle) St. Edvcard, Holy Rosary Elementary, Mount Virgin, Assump- tion, Our Lady of the Lake; (in Tacoma) St. Pat- rick, Aquinas Academy, Holy Cross, Marymount Military Academy, Tacoma Catholic College; (in BelHngham) Assumption; (in Centralia) St. Mary; (in Kiridand) Holy Family. Besides parochial school teaching the Sisters were pioneers in eatechetieal classes. Their novit- iate and motherhouse is at Mount St. Dominie in Tacoma. AT 3-4500 Dominican Sisters of the Holy Cross Teaching and Nursing Fill Their Days INE elementary schools, two high schools, two hospitals and numerous eatechetical classes are maintained by the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Cross stationed in the Seattle Archdiocese. The elementary schools are: St. Mary, Aber- deen; St. Joseph, Chehalis; Perpetual Help, Ever- ett; St. Alphonsus, St. Benedict, Blessed Sacra- ment, St. Luke, all Seattle; St. Mary, Hoquiam, and Star of the Sea, Bremerton; the hgh schools are Holy Angels and Blanchet where three Sisters are on the faculty and the two hospitals are St. Joseph in Aberdeen and St. Helen in Chehalis. It was Bishop Aegidius Junger who, in 1890, asked Mother Hyacinth of the Newburgh Congre- gation to send Sisters to esta,blish a school and hos- pital in Aberdeen and a new province was organ- ized under the patronage of St. Rose of 'Lima. The motherhouse, Rosary Heights, is in Edmonds. Tracing their order back to the Dominican foundation in 1233, the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Cross devote their lives to teaching and nursing.
