In Their Fifty-First Year At Historic Mission... T. MARY ACADEMY, Winlock, and St. Ber- nadette School, Seattle, are staffed by the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Chris- tian Charity whose order was founded in 1835 in Holland by Catherine Daeman, later Mother Mag- dalen. Members of the community first came to the United States in 1874. By 1900 these Sisters had schools in N'ew York, Ohio and Nebraska, an or- phanage in Ohio, and two Indian missions in South Dakota. A year later they took their first school on the West Coast in Sacramento, Calif. In 1911 the Sisters took over the boarding and day school at Cowlitz from the Sisters of Provi- dence and in 1960 they opened a seco.nd house at St. Bernadette Parish. The Sisters of St. Francis have houses through- out the world. In th'e Western Province alone there are some 200 professed Sisters and 25 in the novi- tiate in Redwood City, Calif.
