The Church ar- gues with all history to support her, that never has it been known that violence and tyranny have of themselves realized liberty, or that strife achieved fraternity. "Communism boasts that it is revolutionary, hut to the Christian itis not revolutionary enough• The most revolutionary document that has ever been written was penned not by Richard Wagner, or by Karl Marx, but by Our Blessed :Mother, who in the Magnificat spoke of the overthrow of politi- cal and social kingdoms: 'He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away'• (Luke• - 52-52). The revolution of Communism is 'concerned only with externals, not with the soul of man. It shifts booty and loot from one man's pocket .to another's, and thinks that because one transfers pro- perty, one destroys the desire for personal property. There is no magic to the dissolution of private property, for pride and miserli- ness, and acquisitiveness still ex- ist. All that Communism does in .ts superficial revolution, is to CITY COMMANDERS AT CONVENTION HERE substitute the Capitalism of power for the Capitalism of money. The new Capitalists no longer dispene the profits, but they do distribute the right to own and control. Men are not brothers because they di- vide an apple they have stolen from the garden of the Capitalist. But if men are brothers, the apple rill be divided without the steal- ing. No greater nonsense has ever been concocted than the idea that if you take 20 eggs from one man, and 10 from another man, and liquidate both men, and then make an omelet for 30 other men who had only one egg, then every- one will be a brother. The real revolution is to uproot the selfish- ness that manifested itself in the concentration of eggs. Then will men begin to share their eggs j because they are brothers. '4 The fourth reason why the Church is opposed to Com- munism is because Communism is not sufficiently indignant against the injustices of the econ- omic and political order. This is so because Communism denies an independent existence to ethics and morality. Communism claims that all economic exploitation is only a.n economic problem, and not a moral problem. It insists that .injustices are due wholly to methods of production• It leaves no place whatever for the strong- est protest of all, namely that based upon a moral and ethical order• Men can be summoned to revolution, not s.mply because there is a difference of methods of production, but because there has been a wrong. There is, per- haps, only one word stronger in the whole economic order than the word wrong, and that is the word right. Dace you make morality a 'supers.tructure to economics and therefore inconsequential, you fly Commanders of King County Catholic %Var Veteran Posts are shown here at the prc-convention breakfast in the Assembly Hotel, Sunday.
