Spiritual Director, St. Thomas Seminary HERE IS not a Vicar of Christ in the last 450 years who has not urged devotion to the Rosary and enriched it with indulgences. On no other subject these past five centuries have the Popes written so many encyclicals. As a matter of fact, to this date more than 500 documents have been issued from the Holy See on this rich and profound yer. The Sovereign Pontiffs are nimous in attesting the ex- cellence of it, vying with one another, as it were, in their efforts to bring the Christian World to a realization of the immense benefits for society, the family and individual to be won by the daily and fervent itation of the beads. "The Rosary is a perfect ayer because of the praise it offers, the lessons it teaches, the graces it ob- tains and the victories it achieves" (Benedict XV), and Christ's Vicars on earth have repeatedly exhorted us to say it daily if we "want aCe in our hearts, in our rues and in our Country" ius XI). FATHER DOUGH'ERTY. But a greater person than any Pope has spoken, and she has done so in perhaps her greatest and most signficant apparitions these nearly 2,000 years. In each of her 18 appearances at Lourdes and in each of her six at Fatima, Our Blessed Mother spoke of the Rosary and told us to say it every day. The sublime words of the "Angelic Salutation"--the "Hail Scriptural 00o,ar00 Part 1 'He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High;/ and of his kingdom there shall be no end.' Luke 1:32, 33 Hail h Mary But Mary said to the angel, 'How shall this happen,/ since I do not know man?' Luke 1:3 Hail  Mary Mary"--have a meaning and a memory for her that is beyond telling. She must ever delight in them. And never wilt she tire of hearing repeated over and over again the tremendous and intensely satisfying fact that He who is Mighty and Holy and Merciful has done great things for her, and great things for us all through her. Does not each "Hail Mary" vividly remind us of the inex- haustible wonder of the inexpressibly much we owe to her, by God's grace? Does it not tell us of the tremendous part she played in starting the whole train of all those saving and sancti- tying mysteries we reflect upon in the Rosary? Mary, Our Queen and our Mother wants us, her children, to say each day the prayer that binds us to her--to her who binds us securely to Jesus. That's what she wants, and that should be enough for us--and it is. But there is more. She wants us to say the Rosary WELL. In the magnificent Collect read in the Mass on the Feast of the Most Holy Rosary, we pray: "O God, Thy only beg6tten Son has won for us the rewards of eternal life by His life, death and resurrection. Do Thou grant that we, meditating on these mysteries, as we recite the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise" . . . " . . . that we, meditatihg on these mysteries . . . "--there*s the point, and it is an extremely important one. The Rosary is not meant to consist merely of the repetition of Our Fathers and Hail Marys; the distinctive thing about it is that it is a meditation. Its heart and spirit is reverent reflection on the sublime, elevating and sanctifying events or mysteries in the lives of the holiest individuals ever to adorn this earth of ours. It is a prayer that is ull of the Incarnation of Our Lord Jesus Christ; it is a prayer that is full of the life, the passion and the glorification of Jesus--and of Mary. As we clasp the crucifix in our hands, pass the beads through our fingers, speak the awesome words with our lips, our minds should be occupied with the unsearchable riches of Our Saviour and of what He has done for our salvation, and occupied, too, with the intimate and significant role played by Mary in His re- By JOHN J. Elizabeth Bayley was a lovely and intelligent girl and early in her life displayed deep spiritual qualities. The idea of becoming a nun, however, would never occur to her Protestant self and she found what she thought was her lasting vo- cation in her marriage to William Seton. They had five children, but William was already suffering from the "Seton disease" (un- doubtedly consumption). They went to Italy in a last ditch effort to restore his health and the account of their sojourn there in quarentine is unbeliev- able. It was in Italy that they met the Church and made friends that not only converted the young widow but remained staunchly by her all of her life. The struggle of her eonver- and the founding of her Sis- terhood would sink an ordi- nary person. Remember, she also had five children to raise! Elizabeth Bayley Seton now has the title of Venerable, and may well become the first American born saint. If stead- fast faith and love of God in the face of overpowering blows and hardships has anything to do with it, she well deserves the honor.--D.E.S. TLHE GLORIOUS FOL- Y," By Louis de Wohl, Image Books. t. Paul is perhaps the most dramatic of the Apostles. His miraculous conversion and subsequent zeal in the face of the most overwhelming odds Pture even the most casual der of the Bible. It is na- al, then, that his life should be woven through many stories of early Christianity. It is also natural that Louis de Wohl would have a go at it. As are all of his books, "The Glorious Folly" is a mixture of fact and fiction. In "The Spear" he wrote a around the character of Longinus, whose spear pierced the side of Christ. This same Cassius Longinus carries the sub-plot in "The Glorious Folly," and Mr. de Wohl identi- fies him with an administrator in the Nehr East during the reign of Claudius. This second book is supe- rior to the first, probably be- Cause in St. Paul he had a leal story about a real man Vni stead of a fictional story about a real man. Now this is excellent source material but time was not taken to smooth it out. Any- one who reads both books can spot it instantly. Yet, Louis de Wohl was a real writer. In spite of the quality, his books hold the reader He recon- structs the period well, and his characters are believable. The books are easy to read, and he performed a definite service in showing us other times and important people in a lively and interesting way. "MRS. SETON, FOUN- DRESS OF THE AMERICAN SISTERS OF CHARITY," by Jo- seph I. Dirvin, C.M., Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, $6.95. HEN the beautiful w i d o w, Elizabeth Bayley Seton decided to become a Catholic, her family thought she had lost her wits. Some r e I a t i v e s remained friendly, thinking that even ,though she had chosen such a wierd cause, it was her busi- ness. Others held a resentment toward her for many years. The biography is written from original sources, includ- ing many letters written by Mrs. Seton. Father Dervin has Used this wealth of ma- terial to paint a forceful portrait. The author never tries to mould her into a sugar saint but clearly shows her to be a determined woman, ready to fight for what she believes. The letters that he reproduces display the stilted and flowery 'The Holy Spirit shah come upon thee/ and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee.' Luke 1 ;35 'And therefore the Holy One to be born/ shall be called the Son of God." Luke 1:35 Hail  Mary 'Behold the handmaid of the Lord;/ be it done to me according to day word.' Luke 1:3g Hail  Mary Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and m the Holy Spirit./As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. ! If there be this prayerful thought, the mysteries of the Rosary will inevitably penetrate more and r-ore our hearts, and trans- form our lives into a following of Jesus and Mary in joy and sorrow here, with the confident hope of glory hereafter. In the words of Pius XII: "From the frequent meditation on the Mysteries of the Rosary, tim soul little by little, and imperceptibly draws and absorbs the virtues they contain, and is wondrously enkindled with a longing for things immortal, and becomes strongly and easily impelled to follow the path which Christ Himself and His Mother followed." In short, "we will imitate what they (the Mysteries) con- tain, and obtain what they promise"; we will grow in the miad and the ways of Jesus and Mary. " . . . Do Thou grant that we meditating on these mysteries . . " one could scarecely exaggerate the importance of this reflection. The Scriptural Rosary will help us to do just that-- and it will help us mightily. This is its very purpose; it was de- signed precisely to aid and ensure greater concentration on the mystery, as we say each decade. That it does admirably, and we heartily recommend it. While reciting the Our Father we think of the general sig- nificance of a joyfifl, or a sorrowful, or a glorious event in the lives of Jesus and Mary. The story of this particular mystery is distributed over the entire decade: For each Hail Mary bead there is a brief thought, and this is to be read or recited before the Hail Mary. Happily, the short reflection or the little thought is, in nearly every instance, a direct quotation from Sacred Scripture; in fact, 148 of the 150 Hail Mary thoughts are inspired Words of the Bible. The Scripture selections are as inspiring as they are perti- nent, and they are appropriately and skillfully blended togethe r in each decade. Thus the story of each mystery or event in the lives of Jesus and/or Mary is attractively sketched in 10 consecu- tive steps. This bead-by-bead recall of the mystery cannot but make us more attentive to its profound and moving lesson, deepen our knowledge of its rich content, and inspire us to love it and to imitate "What it contains." And in God's own time we will "'obtain what it promises"-- "What eye bath not seen, what ear hath not heard, what hath not entered into heart of man to conceive." We need not, of course, make use of all ten quotations or Hail Mary thoughts in the decade. Many will prefer to select a couple of them, and repeat them, alternately perhaps, before the Hail Marys, reflecting mean)hile 0n their meaning and signifi- cance for Jesus and Mary, and for themselves as they say the Hail Mary. The is to. reflect on the mystery as we pray the words. Incidentally, it may be well to add that .the above method of praying the Rosary is not something new; it was the traditional : way. The Scriptural Rosdrj i :a modern version of the way it was prayed over 500 hundred-years ago, In the 14th and 15th centuries, Catholics were accustomed to recite a different brief thought of reflection as they said each Hail Mary of their beads. These short meditati0ns for. each Hail Mary. bead described some incident or event in the lives of Our Lord and His Blessed Mother. There is one concluding suggestion. As we recite each decade, we would do well to select atleast :one'virtue of which Our Lord and/or Our Blessed Lady gives, us the example in this or that particular joyful, sorrowful or glorious mystery or incident in / 2 their lives. Then, in each Hail Mary, we bless and praise her and ., her Divine Son for having so perfectly practiced this virtue; in - the Holy Mary, we ask her, the Medi.atrix of all grace, to pray for us that we may imitate Her and Her Son in this virtue. : Take, for example, the First Joyful Mystery. o', The 10th Hail Mary thought is: ..:: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord--Be it done unto me according to Thy Word." " The quotation suggestsOBEDIENCE as the appropriate virtue : to keep in mind during this mystery decade: Mary's obedience or conformity to God's Holy Will, and Christ's constant and perfect obedience to the will of His Heavenly Father'. In the Hail Mary we ,bless and thank Jesus and Mary for the example they have given us, and in the. Holy Mary we beg Our Queen and Our Mother to help us .ever to do the things that please God. Her parents condone it; the priests he talks in say "'egery case is different;" : .: where does that leave me? Hasn't the Church taken an official position on this matter? FTER REREADING the article you mention, about all I can say is that if your young son discovered in it any confirmation of his convictions about steady dating, he should receive an "A plus" for ingenuity or creative imagination. :: I'm "sure he could find similar confirmation in a copy of the telephone directory, a department store catalogue or a good stamp collection. My position in regard to steady dating by young couples who can have no reasonable thought of marriage has been consistent --and I had hoped, sufficiently clear. In the article you mention, which did not address itself to the problem of steady dating but offered advice on how to deal with acouple of college freshmen who thought they were in love, I carefully spelled out the objeienable social and moral consequences of such: pre- mature emotional involvements and then pro- ceeded to counsel the parents on how to deal with the specific case at hand.
