Dr. Lemuel Petersen, excutive minister of the Greater Seattle Council of Churches. fhwesf Pray for Unify Singing at the Seattle encounter was Pacific Lutheran U's Choir choir, directed by Vilem Sokol at Sunday's gathering. I "AN Evening of Christian Friendship" marked another big ecumenical encounter at University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Among key participants (from left) are Charles Toynbee of St. Patrick's Parish, Father Greenspun, who gave the main talk; Dr. Raymond Powell of UPS, Rev. Lynn Hodges, First Baptist pastor; and Peter Coleman of St. John of the Woods Parish. The audience of 560 was divided into smaller sections (bottom photo) where "living room dialogue" ensued. Among discussants were Father Valerian Grubb OSB and Father Frands Coony CSSR. .... AMONG the guests Monday in the Seattle Council KofC's Clergy Night were Rabbi Raphael Levine of Temple de Hirsch and Father Palassis. FATHER Treacy (right) greets fellow television and radio "Challenge" panelist Rev. Dr. Lynn Carson of University Methodist Temple Monday at the closing series of St. Patrick's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. With them is Father Joseph Fulton, OP of Blessed Sacra- ment Parish. Liturgy Brings Convert Work Change PORTLAND, Ore (NC) -- The Paulist Fathers of St. Philip Neri parish here have initiated a new, litur- gically oriented method of convert instruction as part of their "nationwide experiment in apostolic action." Father John Donahue, C.S.P. assistant pastor, said, the new method features a weekly "commentary Mass," including a sermon which is related to regular inquiry class studies, and for catechumanates, the re- stored custom of administering baptismal rites in successive stages. Regular inquiry classes are held for a 30-minute period after the noon Mass and two different Luci Baines Johnson Studying Catholicism WASHINGTON (NC)-- Luei Baines Johnson, 17- year-old daughter of President end Mrs. Johnson, is receiving instruction in the Catholic faith but has taken "no definitive steps" toward becoming a Catholic. The Johnson family "con- siders religion a personal and private natter" and Luci is free to make up her own mind, a White House spokesman mid in confirming reports that the younger of the tWO Johnson girls is receiving instructions. Luci, like her mother and her older sister Lynda, is an Episcopalian. She is a sen- ior at the National Cathed- ral School here, an Episco- palian school for girls. Mr. Johnson is a member of the Disciples of Christ but some- times aRends Episeopalian services. Since last fall Luci has been dating Paul BaCz, 20, a Cath- olic pre, medical student at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md. She wears his school pin. Her interest in Catholicism was reported to have begun with her friendship with Betz. (Last May the White House confirmed that L.i had sent her college board entrance ex- amination results to Marquette University, a Catholic school in Milwaukee, with the idea of seeking admission there. The White House said then that she had not made any similar ap- plications to other schools.) The White House would not say where Luci was study- ing Catholicism. Other re- ports said a priest from Mount St. Mary's College was believed to be giving the in- structions. Taking instructions in Cath- olicism does not necessarily indicate that the person in- volved is going to enter the Church. Frequently individuals receive such instructions for informational purposes alone with no intention of becoming Catholics. Under Church law a convert who has been validly baptized, as Luci reportedly has, is not baptized again upon becoming a Catholic. The Washington archdiocese declined comment on the matter, noting that conversion is a personal and private mat- ter and that any statements should come from Luci, her family or their authorized spokesmen. President Hails CICOP Meet CHICAGO (NC) -- President Johnson, in a message to the second annual conference of the Catholic Inter-American Co- operation Program, hailed ef- forts to strengthen the "entente of friendship" among the American republics. "Our entire Western Hemi- sphere is the beneficiary of your productive efforts to reaffirm aad farth atrmgthm ira of iommon understanding and solidarity," the President told the CICOP delegates. ' More than 2,000 U.S. and Latin American leaders attend- ed the conference January 27- 29 here on the theme "The Church and Social Revolution in Latin America." Mr. Johnson's message was sent to Richard Cardinal Cushingof Boston, one of six cardinal-presidents of PACOP. series on weekdays--Wednesday and Saturday morn- ings, a n d Wednesday a n d Friday evenings -- a schedule in keeping, said Father Donahue, "with the many spare time commitments of modem man." The "commentary Mass" restores convert in- struction to a church setting, he said. "While the new Catholic learns the Church's liturgy by actual participation in the Mass even be- fore receiving Baptism, the Mass series will also serve as a refresher course in the basic teachings of the Faith for Catholics," he added. Various blessings which form part of the baptis- mal rite will be given in successive Steps immediately before the Sunday commentary Mass. The sacrament of Baptism itself will be administered at the Easter Vigil Service. "The term 'college' is not new for it was used in ancient times along with other similar ones (body, episcopal order)," he pointed out. The prelate stressed that "to avoid equivocations in the text of the Constitution (on the Church) it is quite clear that as the apostolic college included the apostles with Peter as their head, so the episcopal college includes necessarily all bishops along with the Roman pontiff, the head of the college itself and of the whole Church." "Therefore the episcopal college understoodin this way embodies the Church's hier- archy with the powers be- stowed upon her by Christ to eeatla lib mkmlall ae- life of the Church.' i I Pope Commens On Air Flight VATICAN CITY (NC) -- The history's first airborne Pope had some comments on air- flight when he received the personnel of the crew of the Alitalia flight which brought him back from the recent trip to India. "We cannot fly through the skies without carrying in our hearts their enchantment, their fascination and our nostalgia for them when we are up there the things of earth are re- stored to their true proportions and we understand how petty and paltry it is to become at- tached to them because of the profound aspirations of the hu- man soul, created to the image and likeness of the Lord," the Pope mkL LEGION OF DECENCY --films Reviewed i The Progress publishes here the complete list of current motion pictures and their classifications as reviewed by the National Legion of Decency.
